Here it is at last, the finalized version of the massive Super Mario 3 airship project that I’ve been gradually working on since November 2011! Initially planned to be much smaller and streamlined, this titanic brute ballooned up to a larger scale, and used over 8,000 LEGO pieces in its completed form — as well as electronic components, such as lights and audio (although the music player wasn't functional at the time of the photo session). The bulk of the ship is built entirely from reddish-brown pieces that resemble wooden planks, to create the effect of a rickety, wood ship made from logs, such as in its respective video game. Rather than have this ship docked on the ground, I used the magic of transparent-clear LEGO pieces for stanchions and columns, to keep it suspended several inches off the ground (as well as its small fleet of miniships flying)!

I can tell you this- It's never easy to build a good airship. I've been doing so, once in a blue moon, and it doesn't get easier.
It usually comes down to what pieces you have to work with, the imagination to visualize the final results, and the knowledge to take said pieces and craft it towards your original vision.
Thanks to places like ebay, I can get dedicated pieces at my fancy and put them towards such things- recently, I've been looking to build a better castle, but one other important factor is time. And, as a student, that' is precious to take care of work....
I initially broke ground for it in fall 2011 (around late October), and completed the bulk of it by early 2012. The photo shoot was from February of that year. The major delays were with parts shortages, such as waiting a week or two for packages of the brown LEGO bricks to arrive in the mail. There were a few engineering delays too, give or take, but those delays were often overcome with the help of alcohol.
I bow down to your great skill!
